Minimum Size Control Wiring?

I have often used #22 AWG shielded Belden cable to connect instruments to a PLC panel. If the power supply is not listed as a Class 1 power supply, however, it looks like Article 725.27 sets a minimum size of #18 AWG.

Is there another code section which allows smaller wire to be used?
