The questions in how they are scored and what you need to pass has never changed, so hopefully you get good luck in finding out what happened and what they stated on your letter.

My dad was renewing his contractor's lisence, well actually changing his business name to be incorporated at the time when the State Board went under the DLI. He had a hard time getting paperwork to be correct, things being submittted, stuff being lost, etc. It was a hard time during that period, and I wonder if not more stuff and people got screwed over in the mean time.

Journeyman Test Update

Journeyman Test Update

Hello All

Some may have picked up on that I was re-testing for the 3rd time to try to obtain the MN Class A Journeyman lisence.

Well I tested on November 22.

I got my resluts today (Nov. 29)

I'm sorry to say, that I didn't pass this third time around. At least my score increased from the last time that I took the test, however.

So, time to wait out the 6 months again and try this whole ordeal once more.

MN state test

Mike holt has on his web sit "Understanding the NEC Top 101 Rules" look in archives. This was very helpfull to one of my students who took and passed the South Dakota exam first time through. My brother who took the MN test said it would really help someone taking the Mn test.

The junior college near my home offers a two day (weekend) exam prep class for the master and journyman electrician. The classes are not expensive and you may want to check into this option besides attending additional code classes.

how to pass the test (again)

how to pass the test (again)

thanks all for the advice. I did take an exam prep class before the (2nd time around test) and the (3rd time around test) and although some questions I reconiginzed were on the test, this time around it really didn't help me out too much.

what helped me out more was some study materials i have gotten from all over the place. (but of course didn't help me all, or I just didnt get it all)

I know there is a couple of things that I just need to understand, one is the motor diagrams and whether the motor will run if the start, stop or some other thing is pushed or something to the effect what is going to happen. Motors and me, well I have a hard time understanding. At least I understood the motor calculations well enough that I could breeze through them on the test.

Another thing that hung me up was the low and high voltage connections for transformers. i used to know this, but guess I don't anymore.

a couple questions i literally could not find in the code book, and they were dealing with corner grounded transformers. i cannot tell you off hand exactly what the questions were, but it had me stumped on finding it in the code and non the less the correct answer.

i'll look into the 101 things you need to know. I'm goign to be taking a code class in Janurary, one that i haven't taken in a long time, so it will be good for me. I beleive that now that I am using it more day to day, versus in my last job I didn't (the engineers there didn't beleive I should know how, or be able to do that stuff).

thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm going to really hits the books mroe hard this coming spring. i also found out a few days before the test, i felt like i didn't know what to study and just wanted to take the test.

Still Haven't Passed....

Still Haven't Passed....

For those of you keeping track, I did take my Journeyman exam the 3rd time around May 30th. I received a score of 64 out of 70.

Still haven't passed. But at least I continue to improve the test score!

Anyone else out there that has recently taken the MN Exam (Master or Journeyman) in the last couple of months? PM me or MSg me here, I got questions to ask.

Thanks!

it's ok the new exam is very hard

it's ok the new exam is very hard

The new exam is a tough one. Sorry you didn?t pass. It is one of the hardest exams in the country. The old days of knowing the questions in the exam bank are over (Coon Rapids used to teach the exam). And Harold the examiner is long since retired. So don?t feel bad. There are people who say they passed easily with 98% in the old format but those days are long gone. I have recently passed the MN master electricians exam (took me two times). The exam is fast paced; I was really pressed for time. You get the exam at 7:30 AM and are done at 1:30 PM. The exam is open book. You get a worn out 2005 NEC, a $2.00 calculator, scratch paper and the Minnesota regulations 3800. The master exam is 80 questions. I think the Journeyman is 70? The are several odd question in the exam and the exam covers every section in the code book. I received a 63/80.

i understand. Journeyman consists of 80 questions, and ranges a bit in the code book, but not everywhere.

i sent you a personal message, hope you read it and respond to me.. I'd like to ask you a few things!

Starbright, I'm sorry to hear you didn't pass. To say that the new exam is tougher is an understatement. I took the old journeyman's exam and had no problems. Started at 7:00, back to work by 10:00. That was a month before it changed. Fast forward a year to the Master's and that was a whole new ball game. (BTW that office lost two of my applications but that's another story) I managed to pass, barely. Having been fresh, I got together to help some apprentices I work with to study for their journeymen's only to see them fail. We diligently studied for two months, these guys knew their stuff. I don't know what happened. It leads me to believe I got lucky.

I took a prep class before taking the Master's which did help. One thing the instructor pointed out was in the state's application information there's a couple of pages of topics covered. The instructor went through and assigned code articles to each topic/area. When he finished he had roughly the same number of code articles as questions in the pool (supposedly).

Just remember, the calculations and diagrams are a given. They are guaranteed to be included so know them all, VD, transformers, wye delta motor configs, series/parallel etc, etc.

I'm not sure I should give any advice as the guys I thought I was helping failed.

Good luck and pm any ?'s

Is there anybody that is studying for an upcoming Journeyman test in MN? If so PM me and maybe we can butt heads together and try to study for this thing.

The one thing I asked the proctor is that I was on my 3rd time under the new format, and she said, oh there has been people that haven't passed it in the same boat as you. Great, like I wanted to hear that!

Hi Amanda
I am not taking the exam. I will assume you were real close each time you failed. I do not think the questions are trick questions but they do require careful reading. I think one of the things that helped me (many years ago) is to try and relate the question to a real life situation. This will help you to understand what they are after. I hope this helps you out.

The last time I took the test, I was 6 points away from passing.

Transformer, feeders, and services are all what stump me. Especially getting feeder sizes and derating calculations done correctly.

Does anyone know this answer?

Does anyone know this answer?

I had this question on my test.

What is the minimum size conductor needed for a guest suite with cooking provisions installed in EMT?

Ican't remember if it is multiple choice or not.

Where is this in the code book?????
