Will a GFI wired backward still trip for a ground fault?

At the big box we're remodeling, I checked the convenience gfi outlets in roof top units and found 4 out of 20 new units were wired hot and neutral reversed, from the factory.

The outlets on another 17 units, same brand, that were installed last year all tested normal. I wish I could remember if the test button worked on the bad GFIs, but I didn't try it, I just used a pin tester.

No brand name on the gfis, just 'made in china' on the back. We re-wired the bad ones, since I'm assuming they wouldn't work properly. Or would they?

As long as the line and load are not reversed I believe they will work, of course working and being right are not the same thing.

I am not aware of any polarity sensitive GFCIs. They will provide GFCI protection with the hot and neutral reversed.
