I am upgradeing the underground electrical system in a mobil home park.I am going to install new pedistals but have a question on size . The existing pedistals are 50A 4wire(2 hots.neutral ,grnd) and the mobil homes plug directely into the recptical.I suspect these are old R.V pedistals and they just pluged the mobil homes into them because they fit.I dont have any problems with overload and everyone has two 50a fuses protecting the home. My question is do I have to install a mobil home pedistal or can I use a upgraded R.V. pedistal. Because the main breakers in the panels in the mobil homes are 50A can I use a 50 A R.V. pedistal?

I am going to preface my remarks by first saying I do not do mobile homes but I do believe the 50 amp cord to the trailer is legal. I think that receptacle is a legitimate mobile home receptacle. Look at art. 550.10. There should be no problem leaving it there.

If you are upgrading the service can you not just use the same receptacle for the home or are you going to rewire the trailers also.

I have done a few mobil homes and here is where I think you may have a problem. The smallest service that they will normally let you install is 100 Amp. Then a 50 Amp. breaker is used at the pedistal to protect the service cord. Mobil homes move in and out and the next may require a 100 or even 200 amp service.

The one thing that I can tell anyone working on a mobil home that always works is this. Call the inspection department and talk to the local inspector. I have had to talk them in to a few things before the job even started or they talked me into a few things. It's much easier than having to change anything. May areas have local codes to deal specificly with mobil homes and they are not all the same.:)
