I don't think that anybody should tell somebody how to do an electrical installation on this site. Giving ideas and helping electrical people solve problems is great. Code interpretation, sharing jobs and stories also great. Not a design manual for homeowners.

Help me out here, where is this DIY engineering you're talking about?

Too all -
Please remember: I'm absolutely fine with DYI engineering. I'll even help out if I can. The examples I listed were the first I saw using a search on engineering. I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone.

You asked so here is a quick list. However, I suspect that since you do not recall any DYI engineering, you will also not see any in these posts either.

OP is only asking for software that will do basic NEC calculations, notice I said basic NEC calculations.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=100140&highlight=engineering

You're right, I don't see the OP asking for engineering help.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=99762&highlight=engineering

Right again I don't see an engineering question. The OP is asking how to measure and calculate Battery Amp Hours, a long shot from being an engineering question.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=98559&highlight=engineering

Correct again, even though an engineer was the first to reply, it is not an engineering question but more of an application question.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=98333&highlight=engineering

This is a question of whether an engineer is needed to seal a design, not a "how to design", heck, the EC was already doing the design without the need for an Engineer.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=96122&highlight=engineering

OP wants to understand this, he is not asking to do the calculations although the Bussman program will get him through it.

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=95401&highlight=engineering

So you would consider a building code and or OSHA requirement with the assistance of a light meter an engineering question?

http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=95312&highlight=engineering

The question was "What is required by the NEC and since the NEC is "minimum" requirement is there any reason not to integrate these two systems?" and I don't see a question of whether something is required by the NEC to be an engineering question

Now to revisit your last sentence in summary,
I suspect that since you do not recall any DYI engineering, you will also not see any in these posts either.
I hope that was not meant to be taking a shot at me in some sarcastic way but, in any case, you are right in your assumption.

Who Cares!! I say keep the site the way it is! We (as outlined in the site rules) need a place we can come an learn, suggest, and express---without having to deal with most (or some) of us deal with on a daily basis--either at work or on a DIY site. In some ways, this is our place (home) away from the other mess.
Side note:
I can say this. In the past, this site was hypocritical. I came as an apprentice many years ago, and was booted for asking a question on Ohms law. I remember the moderator telling me I did not meet the forum rules, and needed to go else where for basic DIY questions.
