Mother Laws House almost caught fire

My mother in law lost her heat in March. She had the HVAC guy come out and do a service call. Replaced a "part" in the outside unit. A week later, heat out again. Fan motor was shot. They kept trying to reset breaker. My father in law is in a wheel chair and this box is right under his bedroom door under the house. No one new it existed. Sometime in the past, someone used this old disconnect as a "junction" box. They were feeding #6 AL with a 90AMP breaker. Luckily I was in town just as the HVAC guy was leaving and he said "i cant get the breaker to reset. You need a new breaker"

Yep. I replaced everything from panel to the unit. Breaker included. Thank the good Lord I was in town.

If that insulation was paper backed I feel the story might have been different....luckily the stars weren't aligned.
