Pierre thanks but can you elaborate? If I understand your drawing I count 5wires rather than 4?

Look at the very bottom of the diagram. The two wires on the right are the line (no neutral), and the three on the left feed the motor (start, run, and common).

Who set the pump? The colors used are not typical for a submersible and who knows how they were hooked up on the other end. Strip a short length of insulation from each drop wire then examine the color again at the fresh cut. Sometiems these old leads can take on different color as they age and the lighting may not be up to snuff.
