Motor starter installation

A contractor recently installed a new soft start for one of our deep well pumps. It seems that the starter cabinet was not large enough for all the relays and controls to be mounted on the back plane. They are instead located on the right inside panel of the enclosure so that anyone needing to adjust timers, make wiring changes, etc, would have to stick his/her head inside and look to the right to see the relays. Is there a code rule that prohibits installing components in this manner? Thanks

Re: Motor starter installation

What happens inside enclosures for controllers of this nature is outside the scope of the NEC. The only relevant code requirements are that the enclosure have the minimum working clearance in front of it, and a warning about arc flash hazards posted on it.

Re: Motor starter installation

Is it fair to say that this should not be a concern unless one is working in the enclosure under live power and withoug proper PPE?

Is there some reason that the power can't be removed for servicing?

Re: Motor starter installation

Thanks for the help. I just don't like the idea of putting my head so close to electrical equipment, even with the power off; but if the NEC has no jurisdiction over "enclosures of this nature", does this also apply to the motor OCPD and overload protection within the same enclosure??

Re: Motor starter installation

Need to keep heads up in these buckets old sq d had the high side of control xformer right where yr hand would be with an amp probe seen a guy get hit makes you heave that amp probe against the wall . also be carefull of circuits still hot even after the bucket breaker is off such as proof of run power going to a plc.
