Motor Starter Sizes

I have 30hp, 480V, 3ph motor that, at present, is connected to a NEMA size 2 combination starter rated at 25hp. The motor nameplate indicates the motor draws 36 amps. The adjustable overloads in the starter are set at 26.7 amps. At present this is a temporary installation.

The motor was specified as a 25hp and we have a size 2, FVNR, MCC bucket rated at 25hp for the motor. The owner ordered the 30hp motor and now wants to use the 25hp bucket on the 30hp motor in a permanent installation reasoning that the temporary installation is working so the permanent installation should function as well.

I'm not comfortable with the idea but is this a violation of any NEC code? I believe section 430.83.A.(1) requires the controller be rated for the horsepower of the motor.

Isn't it amazing how "temporary" installs become "permanent".
A few years down the road when something fails, it will reaffirm it's orginal stauts when some decalres "well, it was just temporary".

Always remember, if something goes wrong, and "they" are looking for someone to blame, you will be the one standing out in left field ...alone...trying to explain why you violated the Code.
 
lurch, Walk away from this one, let him know you don't do work like that. If he

gets someone else, so be it. One thing for sure is he will know that you are

doing the right thing, he might even change his mind and do the right thing

himself!!!
