Mounting fixture under eave

What depth would you need? Wouldn't a standard-depth box be enough?
It depends on the distance between the vinyl soffit material and the rafters. The soffit material is not tight up against the rafters. There's an inch or two of space.

This topic reminds me of a trim I went to finish....There was a faceless gfci in a closet and that sometime is there for x mas receps outside...I looled outside and there wasnt any ....house was already sided and soffits were up....I called the guy who wired it and he said "Oh yeah, there are 7 up there but I just stubbed out a wire and figured to cut them in later(off of a 20' extension ladder).....What a nice guy helping me out like that.....I would normally just take care of it but not that time ...I was on the phone with the boss telling him to send Mr. Bozo out here to do it himself

If i am understanding the question correctly, just use a round metal box with the correct depth and screw it to the wood after you cut out a hole in the soffit

Usually the rafters are on an angle but the soffit is level. I have tried a lot of ways, none very satisfying. I have taken to mounting a weatherproof box on the wall and nippling down maybe an inch or so. Can't really see it with the fixture in place.

Would this work?
