Mounting of 8x8" J-Box.

We have an Electrical Inspector on one of our sites requiring us to relist a "modified" junction box since we supported this box on the side walls instead of using factory mounting holes located on back of 8x8" J/box. I don't understand this as they are made to knock out holes for conduits. I was wondering if there is any code to back us up.... Maybe I can get a letter from manufacturer to fight this correction notice. Please advise.

I still don't understand how it works with 110.3(B).

A typical box/enclosure does not specifically say that we can cut KO's in it, so are we allowed to?
Can we cut a 3/4" KO into the 1/2" KO of a 1900 box?
Can we drill mounting holes thru a 1900 box?
What if the box says to use the holes in the back for mounting it like the OP's situations, does that mean that we have to use all 4 holes? We can't add a 5th hole? How about cutting KOs into the box?

I've seen people say that something was a 110.3(B) violation because the listing/instructions didn't say that you can do what was done, but it also didn't prohibit it.

Where is the head scratching smilie???

We often use custom boxes with no mounting holes in fact they have no holes at all. You can drill your own mounting holes and not use the ones supplied with the box. Why would an inspector even mention something like this. :slaphead:

The inspector should decide if the box is properly mounted not where the mounting holes are.

Ok, thanks. I guess if we want to fight it bad enough we can get a letter from manufacturer.

As stated by Jumper, always ask for a code reference, politely when you are not sure about a failure. I try to do it as if I am looking to be educated not to educate. Once they refer to a code then you can argue, don't argue first. For example above. If the box is actually a weatherproof wireway it is required to be listed.
