Hi Gents,

Are there any clear benefits of 24VDC control power over 120VAC on a 120VAC powered actuator? If both voltage levels are available, it appears that the wetting voltage level for the status on the controller side would dictate the control power selection. Any learning lessons from your past projects?

How big are the actuators? Lower voltage = higher current, more heat, larger conductors to avoid voltage drop etc. so 24V has more limitations on the size of the actuator that can be effectively operated. But if they are all small, 24V is often easier to deal with. Dealers choice.

Any chance of using a spring operated air to open valve?

Unless I misunderstand, I think the actuator is 120 volts and he is asking about advantages/disadvantages of 24VDC vs 120VAC control circuits for it.

Current levels will still be higher for 24V controls, but will be limited power needs to begin with on the control circuit.

If you're worried about wetting, it is best to have lower control voltage power. We have pneumatic actuators controlled by 24VDC. We also have 480V hydraulic drives located a distance from process area which gets splashes every now and then. The point is to provide perfect control while achieving a high degree of reliability.
