What is the code requirement for the installation of a MRI. I think it should go on emergency power under ATS EQUIPMENT. THOUGHTS ?????

Just thinking - Don't know for a fact

Code would not concen me a bit. Considering the customer has spent um-teen-odd-million, they likely want it to work really well. And, as we know, a code minimum job is as poor a job as can be done and not be illegal.

Unless there is a life safety code issue, what does the equipment spec/project spec say? If it needs uninterruptable power - an ATS won't do that.

I can't imagine for a moment that an engineer is not involved in this project. And if there was not one I would not be making any decisions about wiring methods or the source of the power supply.

I agree. These machines are very sensitive and cannot just be turned off and on. Almost everyone I've seen has a UPS at least.

I think putting it on the backup generator is a good design choice. Installing a UPS to allow it to ride through the generator starting period is another good design choice. But I don't see either article 700 or 701 coming into play. Loss of power to an MRI would not endanger a person who is undergoing a scan. They might freak out, but they might get freaked by just having a scan done in the first place. I think that losing power would be a cost concern, in that valuable time will be lost in redoing the scan, once power is restored. That is time lost for other planned scans, and time lost for the equipment operators. I call that an optional standby consideration, not an emergency consideration.

We have many local MRIs located in strip malls and outbuildings, no where near medical facilities. None of these have generators or 'external' UPS systems. They definitely do not comply with anything in Article 700 or 701.

We have done a number of these and the only back up system was a means to switch to a circulating water source (typically city water) for cooling the magnet.
