Multi-wire branch circuit

I didn't say the GFCI would be at the panel.
My understanding from the OP is that the kitchen is basically finished, so the idea is not to do any rough electrical work within the kitchen.

Also, it is possible, although not common, that the entire circuit is 12/3, with receptacles either alternating legs or each duplex split-wired.

Cheers, Wayne

I would have to seriously weigh all of these two pole/sub-panel scenarios against just running a new 12/2 cable to the kitchen and installing two single pole dual function breakers.
It would greatly simplify things if the fridge could be moved over enough so a GFCI could be reached. Then all would be needed is two AFCI w/handle tie and two GFCI receptacles.

All of the modern kitchens around here have the refrigerator in a nook so moving them isn't an option. Maybe the OP can get lucky.

The kitchen was just remodeled and the electrician left the job. The GC was finishing the job and they got caught with no permit. So they are asking us to help get a final inspection. So we need arc and gfi protection at both the fridge and outlets. Trying to see if we can do anything before cutting a lot of drywall
Whoops! Game over. If the GC wants to complete this electrically, SURE! at my time and material with whatever means necessary.
I'm sorry homeowner.

Ron

Just add a new circuit for the refrigerator and abandon one of the wires in the MWBC. Just put a blank cover over the old
outlet box. It's hidden from view behind the refrigerator, so that should not be a problem.

In that situation, avoiding drywall repairs would be very low on my list.

What decisions did GC make that got him into this situation? Do you know if original electrician got paid, and that you will be?

Is the fridge more than 6' from a sink? I don't know about 2023, but as far as I recall since fridge receptacles don't serve the countertop, they only require GFCI protection if they are within 6' of the sink. If it isn't, do a 2 circuit can with a double pole AFCI or whatever, and put GFCI receptacles at the countertop.

The 2023 requires all receptacles in a dwelling unit kitchen to have GFCI protection.

Gotcha. I did the 2023 update in 2024, but my state is still on the 2020 with amendments, and the only work I do in states on the 23 is for oil and propane bulk plants and the occasional convenience store.
