Multiple Panels with CT

Question has come up from a retired electrician that I have replaced at a building. They have a 200Amp 3 Phase 120V/208V which is metered via CT at the entrance point. The building needs to either upgrade to a 400amp service or install an additional 200amp panel/service. The 400 amp panel will still end up feeding a 200 amp panel(either new or the exisiting 200 amp). Anyways, I know that you can run up to 5 weatherheads or 'sets of conductors' through a CT is it possible to have 2 seperate panels running through the CT?

There is no limit on the sets of service entrance conductors and weatherheads except the number of service disconnecting means at one location by the NEC. However, IPL limits the number of weatherheads by limiting to four connections per phase.

Technically, 230.40 Exec 2 permits an unlimited number of sets of service entrance conductors if they are going to separate tenant spaces (each tenant space gets up to six means of disconnecting their service). If it were not for the serving electric utility's limitation, there could be any number of weatherheads at one location.

By the way, consider the metering equipment as a wide place in the conduit where we install our cash register and are not considered to be service equipment. :)

It will be up to the Utility Co if you can run multiple conductors through the CT's. But yes they would work fine and as long as the CTs are 400 amp rated and both panels have a main disconnect I don't think any one would argue the installation.

If the building only has 200a service (drop,or laderal) wouldn't adding a second Service (drop or laderal) violate 230.2. Or are you just talking about upgrading a tenants service and the actual building service is already larger than 200a

The serving electric utility will decide if their service drop is large enough or if it needs to replaced. The serving electric utility will also decide if their CTs are large enough; 200/5 CTs are usually considered large enough for a 400 ampere service. Keep in mind that both of these items are on the line side of the service point. :)

Thanks for the Cash Register Comment... It is a 3 Phase Commercial Service. And I'm trying to get the best deal for the customer since they got a bid and it was outrageous and I know I have the job as long as I'm reasonable.
