Oh crud.

Oh crud.

Maybe the wire was already compromised before you got there. You said you added a switch and receptacles. Was that breaker already tripped when you got there? Sounds like you need to sell this lady brand new AFCI's if you replace the wire and breaker. Tell her that's the only way you can, with good conscious, do this fix. Then mark up the AFCI's to cover your parts. The time is yours, Im afraid. Bring a 12 pack, a couple of friends and have a good time.
OR maybe the wire was bad and you found it for her and for an additional $350 (don't get greedy, you need to pay for the beer) would like to fix this for her.

You pulled the circuit off of an inside receptacle? Added a receptacle outside and a switch for the light. Was the 14/3 nm 15 amp circuit on different phases? Im pretty sure we are not talking handle tie here. Was the Neutral overloaded already and the damage already done? What size light did you hook up? What else was on the circuit?

Right here.
WELL? What's up? What happened?
This whole mess just isn't adding up for me. When the facts don't add up, the facts are wrong. I think we have some missing or bad information here. It's one or the other. "This time light stayed on for a few seconds and then tripped." You don't melt down 100 feet of romex in a few seconds.

I'd have to agree. I once saw a buddy arc-weld for a few seconds on an old FPE breaker. It never tripped and the arc stopped when the screw on the switch burned away. The wires were fine.

I agree, somethings not discovered or disclosed.

I get the gut feeling the line was already compromised by .. something else. Lightning maybe or damaged when installed.
