Recently a high school school?had 1 of the 4 light poles go out. Each pole may have a dozen or so fixtures on it. The standard pre wired musco system. They said that "the pole started to resonate and hum loudly" then they heard some pops etc..... That pole does not work now.

The 30 amp 480v breaker never tripped but the fuses in the ballast housing did blow. All of the wires checked out "ohmed out" fine. No visible arcs or shorts anywhere.

Has anyone experienced sudden ballast failure for no apparent reason?? or is there possibly another cause......Opinions welcome before we replace the ballasts for that pole.

Re: Musco Field Lighting

Sounds to me like your ballast shorted internally. It's rare but can happen!

Re: Musco Field Lighting

Is there an equipment grounding conductor installed and connected to all non-current carrying metal parts at the pole?

Re: Musco Field Lighting

Yes its all grounded + bonded properly. I think It may be an internal short. We have yet to find out. Thanks Fellas
