Installed a mwbc today to a barn. The fellow had a small sub panel mounted in there but only had 10gauge feeder wire ran approx 200 feet from his house. I done some calculations and told him with that size wire really didn’t need the sub panel cus would have some significant voltage drop on any motors or anything that drew larger amount of current.
So he said only wanted dust to dawn light, a light inside and a recep for the fence charger. Chose to just do a mwbc from the main panel instead of spending for money buying separate breakers for the sub panel and using the 10 gauge as “feeders”.
And recently got to thinking and not for sure in my head. I know the two phases don’t use the neutral at the same time to have both loads of current on it at once. But does it work like regular service with the neutral conductor only carrying the unbalanced current between the 2 phase conductors?
