Looking for advice on correcting old wiring in house without a total gut. I have 3 cables of 12/3 coming from from 6 circuit breakers going up to the attic. Each cable shares a neutral that is tied together in the attic where the hots split. None of the 12/3 has a ground. Circuits with shared neutral are opposite phases. Seems like my options for no ground are:
1- replace all wiring with wire with ground, or add ground to every box and bring it back to panel
2- add GFCI receptacles so receptacles can be 3 prong without ground
3- use GFCI breakers so receptacles can be 3 prong without ground

I would prefer option 3. However as I understand it I cannot use GFCI breaker on a circuit that is sharing a neutral with another circuit. My thought is to replace the 12/3 up to the attic with 12/2/2 (a pair of 12/2 will be tough to fish up currently). This will separate the circuits so they each have their own neutral and give me the ability to use GFCI breakers.

Am I missing anything? Any input would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum.

There are two pole 15 and 20 Amp circuit breakers. They're pricey.

Not pricey compared to remodel wiring.
Not pricey compared to new 2-prong plugs, which is still a replacement per 406.4(D)(2)&(4). Still need Dual Function 2-Pole AFCI/GFCI on MWBC with no EGC.

Just because most panel flippers can't make 2-pole xFCI's work on existing wiring, doesn't prohibit customers from using an electrician who can.
