And I thought I retired :D She said the last person to touch it was a "professional electrician"

Re: My girlfriend

New girlfriend huh?

Allow me to give you some advice...
Never do electrical work on the first date!

:D

Re: My girlfriend

:( Somebody at the top level please tell me why this gets to remain, and yet my similarly stupid of me to post it humor got removed(which by the way I would like to apologize to all, and in particular to any who were offended by it.). Is some untasteful humor better than others?

It is late on Saturday night, and I am on my second glass of bourbon. So forgive me if I am missing something. But I do not see any humor in the question. There is a reference to a girlfriend. But there is no reference to any physical feature that men tend to appreciate in their girlfriends or wives (and let us hope that they never meet! :D ).

See? Sometimes a statement can have humor, even if not original humor, and not (I hope) pose too much risk of offering offense.

Re: My girlfriend

Where do you start ??? ok for one what is the box to the right of the meter/breaker box that has no lock nut, looks like all wiring is going through it???? I like the charred white wires too. Also I like the 2 pole breaker with one leg on the breaker and the other on a ground bar kit :D :p

Re: My girlfriend

No Locknut! Good Eye!

I like the fact that they took the time to keep all the G's & N's seperate but then bonded them together! (Very top white wire- 1st pic)

Can someone tell me what the green thing (with a toggle sw on the side) is at the bottom/ 2nd pic? (Looks like an old drive in movie speaker to me... it probably is!)

You can never have enough GEC's... I see 2 in the panel & 2 in the meter/main!

looks like GE, Siemens, CH, and square D breakers are all in the first panel. Did all these companies merge?!
:(

Re: My girlfriend

g3guy, g3guy...now where do I know that name from? :)

g3, I believe she's only in it for the free work. My advice would be, well, how attractive is she? :D

Re: My girlfriend

I should have known someone would lock on to the girlfriend instead of the intended attention to the panels from hell. :D All observations are correct and many more. Why would you need locknuts when the ragged edge of the hole, probably made with a can opener, really grips that pipe. The "green thing" is a sprinkler system control panel. One of a number of other panels sprinkled about. I made up an inspection report for the entire property that filled an entire single spaced page. The time consuming part is I have to check each and every wire to see where they actually do or don't go. The washer and dryer are in a separate structure and you can only use one at a time or the breaker trips  Dwell on that one. I just noticed I'm advertised as being in Maryland when in fact I retired to Arizona. Weather sure is boring here.

Re: My girlfriend

Also: second box has a vert FS box with a horz cover on a duplex rec and no gfi that I can see in the panel.

Re: My girlfriend

as you say, so many violations it boggles the mind, but then again, there is so much to learn. It takes years for something like this to grow, yet we have had no fire. With that in mind, as inspectors we go out here and worry about 1 conductor over on box fill..makes you wonder. Proves the importance of overcurrent protection. most of these I';ve seen have at least one set of wires tapped off the main line heading somewhere.
Theres a pont to be learned from: "a professional electricam was last to touch it" too. She forgets all the hacks but the last professional to touch it is always resposible for years on end :) ("You wired my furnace and two weesk later my fridge quit. What did you do?"
and, on personal note, i guess thats god invented electricians. in my younger days it was said i wouldn't sleep in a house that had unsafe wiring. Like you are about to, I spent more than 1 winter payin my dues.

Re: My girlfriend

jim, you are a wise man :D We' can't possibly evaluate the cost vs profit ratio on this job without seeing both.

Well if it wasn't it was directed to mine!

My "advice" was based on the fact that I have dated a few women that were looking for a man... a " Handy Man!". Hence, my joke of never doing work on a first date.
I thought it was pretty clean, and funny! And that's not easy to do!
:D

Re: My girlfriend

Thank you all for your insights :D I didn't show the other two panels in like condition. No rewire here. Three widely spaced structures with underground pipe. There is plenty of wire of the correct size. Just needs to be sorted out with the correct breakers, on the correct wires for the intended load. And by the way, if you knew this woman, you would instantly hang by your toes from a 765KV transmission line if she asked you to :D

Re: My girlfriend

Dang it why are all the good jobs so far away.Sounds like i might even do this job for free. Not because of her but just because i am worried about safety. ;)
