I see that illumination is required for all working space about electrical equipment. However, as services are subject to work and dedicated space requirementd, you do not alway

Continue ... you do not often see lighting installed at service pannels but yet they pass code?

As noted in 110.26 "illumination" can be accomplished by adjacent light sources. There is no requirement the lighting outlet be any specific location. 110.34 for high voltage areas is worded similarly

As Augie stated you do not need a dedicated light source to illuminate the service panel. Now it's tucked jnto the dark corner of a basement then additional lighting may be required.

but my point is to residential pannnels on the side of houses with no light and street lights 100 feet away or not able to illuminate the pannels at night.

I guess this is one of those codes that are not enforced

110.34 would probably never be an issue in a residential application.

Wonder how this will be looked at under the 2026 code where all one and two family service disconnect must be on the outside of the dwelling unit or within sight from the dwelling unit? 110.26(D) clearly requires illumination.

At the moment I only have my '17 NEC. Is illumination required on OUTDOOR equipment ? (110.26 references indoor)

I don't see anything in 110.26(D) that limits that first level subdivision to indoor applications. It requires illumination for the required working spaces and the equipment requires the working space no matter if it is installed indoors or outdoors. Now when you come to dedicated equipment spaces, there are differences between indoor and outdoor equipment, but not for working space.

So this is wrong as the section does include the word indoors
