NEC 409 references UL 508A panels under its introductory "409.1 Scope" section, but it doesn't mention UL 916 lighting control panels. Could any inspectors out there give an opinion on whether UL 916 panels are covered by NEC 409 ? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Article 409 is new to the NEC in the 2005 cycle.

Since it is new, there will be some glitches, and your question may be just one of those glitches.

Because of the wording in the scope which says " intended for general use...

what does it really cover???

My advice is speak to the AHJ and ask him what he is going to look for.

The article does say Industrial Control Panels, so I am not too sure if this would include certain types of lighting control panels.

409.3 gives some direction, but maybe not enough.

I'm not an inspector, but have found some information related to this at the square d web site, they say to visit this page. Sorry you'll need to dislocate any normal internet safety at this point. Specific to lighting panels, they do have a document 1210DB0505.pdf in their technical library. Yes UL 916 panels are within the scope of NEC section 409, is what that document says.

409.1 does not mention any standards.

409.3 says if the panel contains branch circuits addressed elsewhere in the NEC, then article 409 is applicable. 410 addresses lighting circuits so lighting control panels are subject to 409.
