We have a dental office, where some surgery is being done, and being required to follow 517.30C for hospitals. The emergency generator sets back from the building and conduit needs to be run underground to the transfer switch inside the building. NEC 517.30C requires metal pipe or MI cable and pvc is not permitted for patient care areas. Is there anyother code section I am missing for underground?

Nvcape, you are not missing anything there is no exception to the nonflexible metalic (or MI) feeders.

Re: NEC 517.30.C

517.30 (C)(3) Mechanical Protection, Exception no.3: Schedule 80 rigid nonmetallic conduit (PVC) shall be permitted if the branch circuits do not serve patient care areas and it is not prohibited elsewhere in this Code.

Wouldn't this mean that PVC, while prohibited in patient care areas, would be acceptable to run from the generator outside to the transfer switch in, I'm assuming, a mechanical room, but no farther?

In my opinion, 517.30 (D) (#) Exceptions 3 & 4 are not very clear. The problem is that they don't state WHICH branch circuits. I'm not sure if a feeder meets the exception if it serves branch circuits that then feed patient care areas.
