The above NEC section reads as follows:

Adjacent to counter spaces of 12 in. or more in width that cannot be reached
from a receptacle required in 551.41(B)(1) by a cord of 6 ft without crossing a traffic area, cooking appliance, or sink.

Does anyone have a pictorial representation of what they are talking about here?

I'm no hand at art, so let me attempt artistic wording.

Imagine an RV kitchen in which one wall has a 12 inch counter space, followed by a sink, followed by another 12 inch counter space, followed by a range, and finally followed by a third 12 inch counter space. 551.41(B)(1) requires a receptacle in each of the two counter spaces that are next to the sink. What (B)(3) does is tell us whether you need a third receptacle in that third counter space.

What we ask ourselves is whether you could set a coffee pot on the third counter space, and reach one of the other two receptacles with its six foot cord. In my example, you would have to reach that cord across the range. Thus, (B)(3) tells us to put a separate receptacle, so that we wouldn't have to reach across the range to plug in that coffee pot.

Does that help?

charlie b, your explanation makes perfect sense. It's the way the NEC section is written. It needs more clarification and less complication.

Hmm. Don't expect that from the NEC CMP's. You wont get it. Several people have to die in order for the CMP's to even consider rewording anything. In one regard it's good, we don't have to keep relearning the same things we already know. But then it also prevents improvement.

Sorry, I digress again.

This really isn't something I should post and I spent some time considering whether I should or not.
