I was wondering since I know some of you have the NEC Software..I was researching it and the info I cannot find is the Software able to be used on 2 computers, such as my laptop and my desk top? Does it have an embedded cookie that has to be moved from computer to computer? or does it work off the disk so you have to carry it with you? does it use adobe when it opens? can you put it on a Palm pilot?

My '05 NEC CD (not the handbook, tho) works in both my laptop and desktop.

Just not at the same time. You need the CD in the drive for it to work.

The License for the 2005 handbook permitted it to be installed on two computers. Not sure if that will be the same for the 2008 version.

Ditto - and you do not have to insert the CD to operate the software.

As an aside - the NEC Handbook CD also comes with the '99, '02, and '05 NEC in .pdf format...this component of the CD disk can be downloaded on to multiple computers.

A nice feature with the new Adobe 8.1 reader is there is a search engine that searches the .pdf files for you.

dana1028 you make that sound like some sweet software..is there any other features that this software has? like can you open more than one addition or some method to see the changes between the years?

Just open it on your computer, use Adobe Distiller ( if you have it as one of your printers ) and print it to a PDF version and save it, then you can load it in your palm or what ever you wish.

One of the nice things about the NEC software is when there is a reference to another code section, that code section is a link.

For instance, if you were looking at 110.26(A)(3), there's a reference to 110.26(E). The referenced article is a link, and by clicking on it, it takes you right to that section. You will then be able to 'link back' from there to where you were.

Another couple of things that are nice is, say you're looking at Table 310.16. The headings, as you scroll down on your screen, will stay at the top, while the columns under the headings move up. So if you were looking at the ampacity of the larger wires, the headings are still there and you don't need to scroll up and down to make sense of the table. This is great for the 3- and 4-page tables in the back.

Plus, you can highlight any section you want with an electronic highlighter (I think 3 or 4 colors are available). You can also bookmark sections with your own titles.

I bought the 2005 software that gave me 2 downloads. I used 1 at my home computer and the other at my office computer. It did not require the disk to be installed I later learned that I could not down load it again in the computer of my second office, I called the vendor and explained my problem,
they arranged it so I could do the 3rd download.

Now that is what I am after..I am typing here at home and it would be nice to have here,it would also be nice to have at the office,I would like to have it on my laptop as well..But I am research usb portable drives now..So I can put my info on the drive and just barrow a computer and use my drive..any experience in portable usb drives..

My '05 NEC CD cannot be copied. At least by little ol' me. Maybe by a good hacker, yes, or possibly any 7-year old. But I think the NFPA wants to corral such activities. So I think you won't be able to easily 'copy' the CD to any device, whether it be another CD, your hard drive, or a USB drive, all of which are just various forms of memory.
Without digging up the licensing agreement, I would guess you would, in effect, be violating the terms of it.
I get by with simply keeping the CD with me. Here on my desktop when I'm home, and then I take it with me when I leave with my laptop.

ouch that would suck Cd's used allot normally need replaceing..than oops I forgot it or dang it why did that have to happen as big box falls on it..well it is only 165.00 bucks and it only took 4 days of hunting to get little buck.. So I guess it is off hunting I go..Gonna need some big buck for that..
