I bought the 2008 NEC last week. 50$. The thing is, we are still under the 2002 cycle and probably will be until 2010. My boss is making fun of me for buying it.

I would wager your boss is not an active member here. :D

Nec 2008

If we are talking about the NEC in NY the current code we are working of is the 2008 for commercial. Residential is working of of the 2002 or 2005, not really sure as I dont really deal much with Residential.

As far as I know, the NYS codes call for 2005 for commercial and 2002 for residential. NYC is on 2005, of course with 117 pages of amendments.

Yup, NYC is under the 2007 New York City Electrical Code which is the amended version of the 2005 NEC. They're currently reviewing the 2008 to form the 2010 NYC electrical code.

Information on the Electrical Code Revisions
In 2001, New York City replaced its antiquated electrical code with the 1999 National Electrical Code (NEC), amended for New York City. Under the three year review and revision functions of the program established to revise the Construction Codes, the 2005 NEC, with New York City amendments, was adopted in 2006.
In 2008, the electrical code revision committees, the Electrical Code Revision and Interpretation Committee (E.C.R.I.C.) and the Electrical Code Advisory Committee (E.C.A.C.), will begin reviewing the 2008 NEC to draft new local amendments, ensuring that New York City remains on the cutting edge of technology and electrical engineering.
Additionally, E.C.R.I.C. meets throughout the year providing interpretations and clarifications of the Electrical Code Technical Standards in response to requests from the electrical industry. The Electrical Advisory Board also meets throughout the year and reviews requests for special installations, the use of new electrical equipment and material and service installations over 1000 KVA and all high voltage (over 600 volts) jobs.
2010 Electrical Code Revision Cycle
To ensure that New York City is on the cutting edge of technology and electrical engineering, every three years the Buildings Department adopts the most current National Electrical Code (NEC) with New York City amendments. The technical review of the 2008 NEC is now under way and we are soliciting proposals. Submit the

proposal form (ED-77) (69 kb) by July 31, 2008 to suggest a code change for the 2010 NYC Electrical Code.

When I said NY commercial code I was referring to everything but NYC. From what I have been told and understand NYS is operating under the 2008 NEC for commercial work. I may be wrong or have been misinformed (wont be the first time.) NYC is a beast all by itself and I speak mostly of enforcement north of the city.

Am I wrong here? Can possible some guy with a French name starting with a P help me out?

To ensure that New York City is on the cutting edge of technology and electrical engineering
IMO not much changes to the technology or engineering available in the NEC. And even big changes are hardly "Cutting Edge"...... That said they could wait a few months and adopt the '11, if it did not take them 3 years to pander to the initiated by allowing them to re-write it to their own liking.

CA is much the same way...

That is the extent of my french. ;)

NYS is on the 2007 State Code Cycle. We are referencing the 9 state documents, with the new one this cycle being the Existing Building Code.

For 1&2 family dwellings and Townhouses with egress to grade, we are referencing the Residential Code of NYS (RCNYS). In the referenced standard portion of the RCNYS, we are referencing the Standard- '02 NEC. Remember that there are portions of the RCNYS that supercede and change what is in the '02NEC.

For multifamily buildings and all other installations, we are referencing the other 8 documents. There are requirements in most of the other State documents that should be paid attention to, but sooooooo few know them or care to know that is will take a couple of code cycles to weed those people out and have more equal enforcement within our industry.
In the Building Code of NYS (BCNYS), Chapter 27 (the electrical chapter) references the '05 NEC in its entirety.

That is the short version...:)
