There is no requirement that any fixture within the tub zone (8'X3') be listed for a wet location. A damp location fixture is permitted if it isn't subject to shower spray. I don't know about you but I have never sprayed the ceiling above my shower with the shower.

Tell that to Shaq. Tall people can repel high water pressure, Not likely, but how much of the NEC is likely??
Nobody is arguing what should be put in the zone but rather what the code allows. If you have a cathedral ceiling over the shower and the recessed can is 14 feet high (I wire a bathroom like) the fixture does not need to be wet location, even if it is in the "zone". It does however need to be damp location.

Anything over 8' zone can be whatever you want. Subject to shower spray is up to AHJ, I would assume.

The best indicator of shower spray may be the height and type of showerhead.

I disagree-- my read of this article is anywhere above the shower must be either damp or wet location and anything outside the shower area 3' wide and 8' above the rim of the tub or shower threshold must also be wet or damp location listed. Everthing else can be standard fixtures.

infinity, I worry about it because it happened to my wife in our first apartment. I heard that thing go off clear in the living room. Scared the h%^$ out of both of us.

And Larry, I would have thought the same thing about it falling down. And as a kid I actually sent a letter to Tottsie Pops telling them how many licks it took.

You're incorrect. Outside of the zone can be any type of fixture. Within the zone damp or wet depending on if it's subject to shower spray.
