Hi.i am wiring a garage and the wiring method I used was 14-2 nm.I stubbed the nm wires in the locations were I would like the lights.The inspector told me that I needed a box for nm wires.I talked to a lithonia rep.and they said all of their strip lighting fixtures are listed as a raceway,but I cannot find were they listed as a juntion box.If listed as a raceway I would assume that they are listed as a juntion box. :?:

The fixtures might be listed as a raceway...but what is the NM rated?
Check the rating for the wires within the fixture ~ probably 90C ??(410.5, 410.24, 410.33)?
What is NM rated at ~ 60C (334.80)?
What did the inspector say the violation was?
Simply saying "You need a box" really isn't the answer to the question "Why do I need a box?"

Is the garage being finished with drywall? If yes then the inspector wants to make sure if the lithonia strip is exchanged to a incandescant surface mount that you'll have the correct Jbox.
If the garage is unfinished then don't worry, The inspector will see everything on the final inspection

The NM is rated 90?; 334.80 just says that we have to use the 60? column when determining the ampacity.celtic said:

Obviously it was a rough in inspection with 14-2 NM hanging loose.
Where is your rough in housing for the recessed can?
If it was me, and it wasn't I'd had put a romex connector on the loose wire & write on the stud " 8' Strip" in plain site for everyone too see.
Most inspectors would then figure it out with out me having to explain it.

All things being equal, I've always used the fixture as a junction box, and I don't see a problem with it. I'd be curious to hear the inspector's take on this one.

Whenever I see a Romex hanging out on a rough (which is almost every single house), I simply make a note of it to check the fixture type on the final. If I see a self contained fixture, like a strip fluorescent, on the final, then everything is fine. If I see a keyless, then there's a problem.
On the rough, you just make the note and move on. If it's a homeowner exempt, I might question the homeowner just to make sure. But for a contractor, I write it down and move on.

I think David's approach is reasonable. I leave stubs out on rough for undercab lights and Plugmold all the time, and the inspectors understand why I didn't install a box.
