Why is it unreasonable to ask you for a definition of cheap in this application? Cheap was a dominate specification in your first post, but there was no definition for what cheap meant. Only in your head did that definition exist.

At some point I mentioned possibly $10, but I only used that value because I thought it was unreasonably low for what you wanted to do. Now, by inference, it appears that $10 is what you mean for cheap, but you still have not explicitly defined cheap. With respect to the definition does your time factor in.

If someone could provide you a list of parts to do what you want that might cost $20 to $30, but would require a considerable amount of your time, then is that outside your specification of cheap?

Without clear specifications you are going to get answers or suggestions all over the map.

Not cheap enough is my guess.
Possibly so. The one we used was listed at about £40 but, with discount, we got them for just over £20 or about $25 at current exchange rate.
The one George found (and it looks like the very same beast) could probably got for around that price.

Found this with a little googling, should have the built in pump exercise function. Would probably still need to fire a hp rated relay or just keep a spare socket mounted in ice cube relay. Sump pump could be too much for it straight but you may be able to find better rated ice cubes that fit the Taco given socket.

Single ice cube is only 5 amp rated. They're made for a much smaller motor.

Simpler wiring, power in, power out, and float switch in CL 2 goes where the thermostat would be.

Just to throw this out there......
Are you set up for a power failure in the wet season to operate the sump or do you just hope power doesn't fail?
I know in my house when the sump is running a power failure would not be good......
I'm set up with Generator power but I have to be there to start it and transfer it.

I am in the same boat.

When we moved in 17-18 years ago I bought a portable generator right away because of the sump pump and the fact if I get more than say 6" of water on the basement floor it will get in the oil burner / boiler.

But the only use the generator has gotten is at work when I used it one a couple of jobs. We have a municipal light company and they are very reliable. The outages we have had have been very short.

That said I am sure there will be a time I need it. A buddy installed a water powered sump pump as a back up for power failure (he is on city water which is always on) I have been thinking of doing that. https://www.amazon.com/Basepump-Water-Powered-Backup-Sump/dp/B000GBUU7G

I like that! Unfortunetly I'm on a well.......
But like you we have a pretty reliable power company and I rarely use it. But I do try to start it and exercise it every month.
Nothing worse than having the setup I have and the generator won't start..... :ashamed:

How long of an outage is permissible before one drops the "pretty reliable" title?

Most utilities are pretty reliable until mother nature shows how strong she is and causes damages over a widespread area.

No outage is permissible if my pump is running.
But things do happen to cause outages. Last year we had a ice storm that took out power for close to 48 hours.
Didn't need the sump pump but the generator kept the lights and furnace on and for that alone it paid for itself.

Did you read the post?

I did read the post.

Most dwellings you can call utility reliable if the power is never off for more then a few hours at a time.

A hospital will want (and will be required) to have an alternate source even if the utility is only off for a few minutes.

How did we ever survive before we had electric power?

How did I ever grow up before there were smart phones and social media?

So you want to argue about my idea of 'pretty reliable' vs yours?

I live in a single family home, not a hospital.:D

And with that I guess we close the thread.
