Need help on contactor and shunt trip

how do you know what size ( va ) transformer it takes to hold coil close on a contactor I have 24 volts for coil voltage .
 
most mfg. catalogs have a list for the inrush & holding currents for their coils. what brand/coil # or cat # ?
 
You really don't want to constant power a shunt trip anyhow. Some of them will burn up if you constant power them. You really need a one shot arrangement.

A picture would be helpful from the OP.

I wonder if he's got the shunt trip controlling power to the transformer that's providing the power to hold the contactor closed.
