If serching for a site name - just do a "whois" search - it will tell you who the site isd owned by - if anyone. If for sale, if registered, who, where, when, if active, the DNS, etc...
IMO this paranoia of searching a name and it gets stolen is just that, not that it can't happen...
But seaching a name can tell you when it may become available again, so you can check it again. Although a certain company has has a name I want - I know when to see if I can snatch it. But I think they will be right on top of re-registering it.....
