Regarding installation according to the UL listing - Can a NEMA 3R enclosure (pullbox, disconnect switch etc.) be installed in any orientation other than the standard wall (vertical) installation. I'd like to install a 3R box on its back on a roof... Thanks in advance. Steve

I would think it can be mounted in any orientation in which it is (a) within manufacturer's specs and (b) still rain-tight.

I agree with Larry but do not believe mounted on it's back on a roof would maintain the raintight integrity of the box. Can you use a NEMA 4X pvc box instead. They have gasketed covers and would probably better suit this installation.

That's a blanket statement that may or may not be accurate; we'd have to see the box.

I found an FAQ at www.nema.org that answers my very question with:

4.4 ENCLOSURE ORIENTATION
If the acceptability of a Type 2 or 3R enclosure is dependent upon a particular mounting orientation, the enclosure shall be marked to indicate the required orientation unless the mounting is obvious.
If a Type 2 or 3R enclosure has knockouts for conduit in the sides or back of the enclosure in which the equipment to be installed is not known, it shall be marked to indicate the area in which live parts are to be installed.

The equipment is only available in 3R. I'll ask the mfr. TNX
