NEMA 4 Enclosure Patch

Greetings,

I am an engineer that made a bad decision on a location of a device, which is mounted to a NEMA 4 Panelboard Enclosure. I would like to move this device, but if I do, I don't know what we can do to patch the hole and maintain the NEMA 4 rating. Are there any standard parts or tricks we can use to do this? Thank you for your assistance.

If it’s a small round hole, there are UL listed Type 4 hole seals. Someone might have small square ones too, but beyond maybe 2”, getting and maintaining a seal that UL will trust to “the skill of the installer” becomes untenable.

If it’s in the door however, you can probably buy a replacement door.

Thank you. Unfortunately, the device is not in the door. However, we did find a helpful bit in NFPA Article 110.12 regarding this sort of thing:


110.12 Mechanical Execution of Work. Electrical equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner.

(A) Unused Openings. Unused cable or raceway openings in boxes, raceways, auxiliary gutters, cabinets, cutout boxes, meter socket enclosures, equipment cases, or housings shall be effectively closed to afford protection substantially equivalent to the wall of the equipment. Where metallic plugs or plates are used with nonmetallic enclosures, they shall be recessed at least 6 mm (¼ in.) from the outer surface of the enclosure.
