Is it possible to use NEMA starters with IEC motors? I have a project were they want to generate power at the local voltage in case utility power becomes available someday, but want us to design based on ANSI/NEMA because of the flexibility for design changes, schedule, and economics. The voltage is 415 VAC 50 Hz. I haven't seen any NEMA motors rated at this voltage.

Absolutely. NEMA ratings on starters are just a way of being able to quickly pick a product based on a "not to exceed" HP. What the motor is down stream is largely irrelevant. In addition, any given NEMA contactor size is always rated higher than an equivalent IEC contactor size for a specific HP.

One caveat however. NEMA motors tend to be designed to be used with Class 20 Overloads. IEC motors tend to be designed to be used with Class 10 Overloads. Just make sure you use Class 10 if you are not sure.
