Nest thermostats on a 2-wire system?

To me there are two problems. The first is simple people are lazy. What is wrong with a simple thermostat? Second these companies are greedy and want to sell junk to make money and who cares if they work. I do not upstand the why you need all this "smart" stuff. We did not have it for years and now we can't live without it? I also do not think you save any money using any of the "smart" thermostats. Yes the heat/ac doesn't run as much when your not home but then when you get home it has to work harder to get to you set temp. How is that saving money?

Depends, if you have rich people problems, it is easy to check on vacation homes to see if the heating/cooling is working, alarms if not. A lot of them I’ve installed was exactly for that. Easy to have the heat on or cooling started before you get there. My old boss had several homes in different states and countries, and I could let his man Friday know something wasn’t working, so he could take care of it. We have a lot of half backs that stay in the summer, and go back to Florida in the winter. Frozen pipes from a failed heat unit can be very expensive when the water has been running for weeks.

I can see that. Thanks

That's how real "rich people" do it, not rely on some techi remote control to save money.
But those of us that aren't rich do rely on the techi remote. I especially like the vacation mode versus normal set back, remote access and alarming are pluses.

If Ted Cook were an electrician he would fit right in on this site.

As @tthh says above, there are plenty of other programmable thermostats besides Nest and Ecobee. Seems that Nest and Ecobee make wild claims about saving energy in their ads so that's what people ask for. Honeywell (who you'll probably never see an ad for) has any thermostat you could ever want, and they work with all heating and cooling systems because that's what Honeywell was founded on. Not some techi toy company.

I just happened to watch this video last night. Shows what you get into with those things.
