My son is trying to relocate his PC and he said it will be 420?+ from their network router. What?s the maximum distance to run a cat 5 cable on a network?

Repeaters are often much more expensive than a multiport router or switch, yet the use of a router or switch will also get you another 100 meters.

While the standard says 100m, most structured cabling installers will only install 90m to allow for 5m of patch cords at each end. Depending on the quality of the terminations, patch cables, and jacks used this can be an issue in some cases, especially with homemade patch cables.

Tryinghard,

If your son has the latitude to do this ? run the new network cable the 420+ feet, leaving a loop at some convenient location in the middle with sufficient in length to insert a repeater. If it works, it works. If not, cut in a repeater. No sense buying extra hardware.

I agree that the maximum length standard for most network cables is 100 meters. When I purchase network cable, my purchase order always specifies that a Certificate of Conformance assompany the shipment.

I always adhered to the 100 meter spec, but a rhetorical question here is: the cable is always put up in 1,000 foot spools/boxes ? ?how can the manufacturer certify that the cable met testing standards? if the put-up length is 1,000 feet? I know, they extrapolated the test results from past statistics, but it would seem that a reputable manufacturer would not risk their good reputations if they were not confident.

Have your son install the 420+ foot run. I?ll bet it works reliably.

Good luck,

Steve

yes you are correct the max length is 328ft and repeaters are unreliable in my opinion. this must be a business related install as that is quite the distance for residential. I would personally use 2-way fiber it requires only the fiber converters and the speed and reliability are great..especially if you have multiple users on it..

Naah, just install it and increase the voltage......

Or better yet, do it with mirrors....

If your going to do it Cheaper, faster, better, why not do it right the first time. 90 meters is the max station cable length, with 10 meters for patch cords. And why are you using cat 5?

Because 100 meters is probably only a guide line...?

Evidently Stephany has never been on a budget before.

I don't know what the setup is on this job but what about setting up a wireless bridge with 2 wifi routers? Pull them minimal distance. Maybe not but just a thought.
