where does it state that on an older home that the ground wire and the neutral wire cannot be on the same neutral bar when the panel only has one bar for wire attachements?

250.24(A)(5) Although this doesn't state "older home", this requirement has been included in the code for a long time.

Roger is assuming you are talking about panelboards that are downstream from the service disconnecting means. In the service equipment, the neutral conductors and the grounding conductors may be landed on a single bar. :)

Charlie is right, for some reason I read sub-panel in there.

No Roger i did not mean a sub panel but the main panel for the home.

Then the grounded and equipment grounding conductors are permitted to be terminated on the same bar.
