I'm installing a subpanel to serve a ductless "minisplit" heat pump, with the intent that 1 or 2 additional minisplits may be added in future.

The first minisplit does not require a neutral - just ground and two hots. As best I can tell, this is pretty typical of these units.

But I'm unsure as to whether it'd be a mistake to make the subpanel 240vac only, IOW not run a neutral to it. Is boils down to this question: is it standard for minisplits to not require a neutral ? How likely is it that a future minisplit added to the panel would require a neutral ?

It's a subpanel. Run the neutral. You'll thank yourself later.

I agree. The cost difference is small. Besides, you may have to install an outdoor convenience GFCI receptacle if there isn't one with in 25'. Just my opinion. Just curious, what size sub-panel are you going to install ? If you're planning on sizing the panel based on something that might be added in the future why not include the neutral ?

Most minisplits are 240v but there are 120v units.

i have never seen a 240v unit that needed a neutral however run the neutral to the panel. You never know when you may need 120v

unfortunately I have to close this thread as we are not allowed diy threads even if it is by an engineer. Personally I don't like the rule but it is there so I will be the bad guy
