Can you tell me if using the screws on the side of an outlet to connect the neutal wires. (ie... line in on one screw and line out on the other.

Yes this is permitted for a two wire circuit. A MWBC cannot use the two screws on the device to connect the neutrals together. The continuity of the neutral conductor cannot rely solely on the device therefore the neutral conductors would need to be spliced and pigtailed.

and just to expand on his statement, the grounding conductors always need to be pigtailed to a device.:smile:
