Neutral with a red stripe

The other day pulled apart a handy box with MC feeding it with a black white with red stripe and a ground. Y would the neutral have a red stripe?

there are cables with 2 neutrals in them (for instance 12/2/2). one of the neutrals will have a stripe to indicate that. if the cable didn't have two neutrals, whomever made the cable was most likely using up the remaining striped wire left on the reel to make up the cable you got.
