New 200 amp panel

When upgrading from 100 to a 200 amp panel, how do some of you guys handle existing wires that are now too short to reach the new breakers? I know you can’t use wire nuts inside the panel enclosure, so I was wondering, do you run the short wires into an enclosure and then Longer wires back into the panel box?

There are many out there that think you will go to hell if you use a wire nut or any other splicing method in a panel enclosure, but there is nothing in NEC that prohibits it.

i was told years ago that it was not allowed, so I just believed it. Thanx for the clarification. And no, I’m not a residential electrician, I work with mainly 600 vdc, so I’m not familiar with the codes and thank you all for the help.
 
"No splices in the panel" -- I always wanted to know the source of this myth... Of all the made-up "rules" propagated by (I suspect) pre-sale home inspectors, this one must be the dumbest. Panel's enclosure (what most call "panel") is technically just a big junction box with breakers and busses thrown in.

Installers that are very particular on how it looks when all made up don't like to see splices, they look out of place, they then teach anyone they are mentoring that this isn't allowed.

Now it may take away from the looks, but it doesn't necessarily make it any more or less safe of an installation.
 
I've been splicing them for as long as I've been doing electrical work. Thankfully nobody ever promoted that "no splices in panels" nonsense around here.
 
I use a lot of troff's aka> 376.22 ,and counter (B) Adjustment Factors with 310.15(A) ex

I'll also use 2" male ta's on top of it , via 312.5 (C) EX (1-7), plug 'em w/ dux

I'll install one larger ground bar in it, and make a #4 bare cu into the panel below, 1/3 less clutter

Looks nice but the cables into the terminal adapters and into wireway is a violation.
