I did cover marketing in my business plan. It involves yellow page, local publications (news paper) as well as networking (chamber, other contracting networks). I am looking at getting into commercial, industrial and residential jobs. I do have personal funding but want to keep my initial billing at under $2000 unpaid from any one customer. My business plan calls for starting in the service sector/small new construction and working my way into larger projects as the need and funds arise. I have heard from many contacts in the area that the electricians that are in business in the area tend to be flakes (showing up late, not returning call, disappearing). I want to separate myself with superior customer service. I understand the economy and the market is slow right now, but I want to be positioned in a good place when things start to upswing (I am thinking 2010). That being said, where in your experience did you get the best bang for your buck in marketing?

By far radio has been our biggest call generator followed by news paper adds.Don't waste money on phone book covers ,maps and other such things and beware of callers claiming to be associated with the sherrif or school. We had a call from someone claiming to be Booster club promotions and they were printing the football schedule well as football is big I thought sure and especially if it was for the booster club well come to find out the school ,booster club nor anyone associated with the football program had ever heard of them. Always check them out before buying.

Each market is going to be different in cost, but around here it is fairly inexpensive to do tv ads that run late at night. (talking midnite to 6:00 am). I was talking to a friend who sells real nice windows and doors, and mentioned I have seen his tv ads. He told me they come to six bucks each for a 30 second run. Thats in minimum 100 a month ads. Making the ad was a different story though....

Go see everybody you know in the commercial market shake hands ask questions pertaining to them. Generated lots of work for me.

From the Dale Carnegie school (roughly) your customers do not care about you, your wife and your children. What they do care about is their themselves, their wives and their children. make the conversation about them.

Put together a flier and POUND THE STREETS.
