New Jersey Utility

I have recently reworked an existing utility to accomodate a new wrap around porch. I ran the SE cable in Sch.80 pvc and set the meter pan about 48" to center, and is located at porch level. (p.s.e.&g. must come up on porch to read) Township approved rough.
Utility is quibbling. Am I in any kind of violation? Whats the utility griping about?

Re: New Jersey Utility

Some utilities have rules that go above and beyond NEC. The installation may comply with NEC but not with their rules.

Re: New Jersey Utility

Maybe the 6'6" requirement (to top of meter pan)?

The town generally only cares after the meter, the meter is (or at least should be - because they give them away for free) PSE&G's equipment.

I spoke with a rep from PSE&G last Thursday, I was told all license holders WITH business permits (aka contractors) will be recieving the "new" service requirement book shortly.

Re: New Jersey Utility

You can get into all kinds of wierd things. There are some meters for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company that are 12 or even 20 feet off of the ground to clear a public sidewalk or commercial driveway respectively. These are areas where the buildings are crammed together. I would hate to have any of those metering routes if I were a meter reader.

Most utilities consider a a 4 foot mounting height within acceptable parameters. However, the matter that the porch could be refitted with an eclosure or even turned into a genuine indoor space is what is killing you. You will need to relocate the meter around the corner.

Everything for residential metering is going to be going over to Automated Meter Reading anyways.

PSE&G can be a pain, and I work with them on a regular basis plus I live in Jersery. Did you get their requirements book, because I know they usually state mounting in there. If the inspector isn't griping, then most likely you've violated there rules for installation. I know they usually like the meters on the side or around back, so that might be a problem.

celtic,

The old PSE&G service requirement books, show that you can't do that, but if a PS inspector told him it was ok then, he should go back to the inspector that approved that location.
In the 35 yers i have been working in PS area, the inspectors always come out, and let us know if the location is ok, if we do a job without their approval, then we have a problem.

I agree satcom...I had the PS rep. meet me last week - had a difficult scenario moving meters not only from inside to out, but from West side(less than 3' clearance) of house to East side ( driveway, stairs, windows etc). I have NO problem calling PS and meeting with them - saves ME time (aka money) and aggrivation.

The story here *appears* to be that the town approved the location when it may have been PS's call.
