Re: new main panel install

You cannot count breakers to determine load on a panel. It is much more complex and should be done by an electrician or EE.

Re: new main panel install

The amperage of the circuit breaker is a red herring.

The wire connected to the breaker will connect to electrical items that will use the electricity to produce light, sound, motion, etc. The electrical items running at any given moment determine the actual amperage going through the breaker.

Since most electrical items go on and off, that is, they are not all on all the time, just adding up the amperage of all the electrical items is also a red herring. . .well, maybe not quite so red, but still a herring.

The National Electrical Code has clear guidelines for calculating the amperage of the electrical items connected to a circuit breaker. The guidelines are best applied by someone visiting the location, or, at least, familiar with the specific installation.

Re: new main panel install

I agree with all of the other responses 100%.
I would like to add The total calculated load cannot exceed the ampacity of the service entrance conductors.

Re: new main panel install

while you all are looking at the herrings, I am looking out for the spiders. Black Widows down here. nasty.

Re: new main panel install

Unless a local code over rides the NEC, you are limited to 42 over current protection devices and 225amp max on a lighting and applicance panel.

Re: new main panel install

You use red herrings and black spiders as travellers and splice the white elephant through
SHHHESh :D

Re: new main panel install

That's one of reasons for using galvenized conduit.

It won't rust as badly supplying water for the red herring. I hate to see them die.

Are you sure they are limited to 225A max?
