when installing a 12kw fixed generator using and automatic transfer switch is it necessary to install a 200 amp disconnect after the meter before the transfer switch, and if this is done will the equipment downstream be treated as sub panels with the neutrals and grounds seperated even in the existing 200 amp panel

Re: new service disconnect before auto transfer switch

Yes, all grounds and neutrals after the service disconnecting means must be isolated.

Re: new service disconnect before auto transfer switch

As long as the transfer switch is service rated, there should be no need to install a disconnect before the transfer switch.

You said:As long as the transfer switch is service rated, there should be no need to install a disconnect before the transfer switch.

Really. I had a service panel with a built in transfer switch, but the inspector told me that I would need to put an additional disconnect next to the generator???? The Generator switch is rated at 30 amps.

Re: new service disconnect before auto transfer switch

Resistance,

The 30 amp disconnect on the generator should have been all that was required up to your transfer switch.

Thanks!

Yet, there is no switch on the generator itself!
