Has anyone used this new stuff yet?

They say that it doesn't require any pulling compound and I was wondering if it really works dry. Also I've noticed that it seems to be only rated as straight THHN which would be a major difference from most modern cables that have a THHN/THWN rating.

I have used this on 3 tough pulls. 350, 500, and 600 all parallel in PVC underground. IMO it would have been impossible without soap.

The real problem with this stuff is its hard to grip when feeding. It also picks up dust making it even more slick.

always use the soap

always use the soap

I have used this stuff. many parallel 500s, and the tugger still groaned with soap. I guess i just don't have the guts to try it. Old habits die hard. Besides, i think apprentices look funny covered in soap..

I used it last month on a 250' pull of (3)3/0 in 2" emt with (3) 90? sweeps. Pulled it by hand with no other lube. It was unbelievable!

Dooon't...yooooou...believe it!! I have had the same experiences as other guys. Never would have made the pull without lube. It may be better, but you still want the soap.

You can't use this product underground...it is rated THHN only and not listed for use in wet locations.

APPLICATIONS
Southwire SIMpull? THHN or THWN-2* conductors are primarily used in conduit and cable trays for services, feeders, and
branch circuits in commercial or industrial applications as specified in the National Electrical Code 2 . When used as Type
THHN, or T90 Nylon conductor is suitable for use in dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90 ?C. When used as Type
THWN-2* or TWN75, conductor is suitable for use in wet or dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90 ?C or not to
exceed 75 ?C when exposed to oil or coolant

Funny you bring this up, because this just caused a little heartache here today. The inspector was looking at the new underground pull, and in his kind-hearted way, he said, "I need to see something with a 'W' in it on those conductors". I always took for granted that all modern THHN was also THWN. Not so. GRRRRRR!!!!!! What a way to get caught with your pants down. I'm ticked.

Okay, now that I read the manufacturer's data, the actual name of the product is "SimPull THHN". They actually put THHN in the name of the product, but it is really also dual rated. Why don't they just put that on the freaking imprinting on the conductor? This really jammed things up today.

Well, there's a job sorta on hold at this very moment because of this issue, and I'm a little ticked about it. Glad no action will be required (like repulling other conductors), but it's still aggrivating. Very aggrivating.

It's kinda tough to come up with a snappy jingle and slick illustrations with all those extra letters and numbers... Why do you figure Cerro can't get any traction vs. Southwire?:

SURFACE PRINT
? Sample: CERRO WIRE
VINYLON-A 750 KCMIL
(UL) MTW OR THWN-2
OR THHN OR GASOLINE
AND OIL RESISTANT II
OR AWM FOR CT USE
SUN- RES 600V - C(UL)
THWN75 OR T90
NYLON

Blech....

"Simplify" -- Henry David Thoreau

Sure, you're ticked today. But would you buy that Cerro tomorrow?

I saw what Don said and thought "I HOPE TO GOD HE'S NOT RIGHT!!!!"

I had to look that up ...I would have a nice long UG run to remove.

Doesn't the Southwire "No Lube" stuff have to be printed with the same infomation? By the NEC (I'm too lazy to get the book right now.)?

We shop our wire between 3 supply houses. I like to give the owner 5 days before I need it. The last one was 2 sets of four 350's and a #1 305' long.

Thats over 10 grand.

I pull what they send me and as Marc said we assume it THHN/THWN.

That will really be up to the inspector, if the jacket does not have the 'W' on it he can turn it down.

Look at 310.11(A)(2) for the required markings.

If it doesn't have a W on the conductor you can't use it in wet locations. I don't care what the catalog or ad says.

In spite of 110.3 ?

So does this stuff have anything more that "Southwire No lube Simpulll XX AWG THHN" printed on it? If so, that would be much less information than they usually print.
