The sales lady from Newark came by the other day. She was hawking some new hookup wire from Alpha. Its AWM which we don't use much but is much thinner than MTW so might come in handy now and then when space is an issue. I told her we probably would not use it because we generally use MTW.

As might be expected from one of my designs, I had some enclosures that are pretty well packed so thought I might try this stuff as a #14 is about the same diameter as a #18 in MTW.

I get a quote on it. The stuff is almost $1 a foot! I can get teflon insulated wire for 20 cents a foot. Who is going to pay $1 a foot for #14 wire? Thats 10X the cost of MTW.

Here is more on AWM:

Appliance wiring materials

Unlike most wire categories, appliance wiring material (AWM) is a Recognized Component used in UL Listed or Classified end products. AWM wires are intended as factory-installed or factory-provided components of complete equipment submitted for investigation, rather than for direct separate installation in the field. The final acceptance of the component depends on its installation and use in or with complete equipment submitted to UL. Learn more.
