A reminder for engineers, architects, building officials, electrical inspectors ... oh yeah electricians ;)
January 1, 2006

In 31 days New York State will be referencing the 2005 NEC for electrical work.

The residential work will be delayed until May or June, when the Residential Code book should be published/printed.
For all other work, the 2005 NEC is your new reference. Good Luck!!!

New York electricians can no longer complain about being so far behind the country anymore.

Thats amazing Pierre. Last time you and I spoke, I think you said that NY was on the 96 code until about two years ago, wasn't it?

So this IS fact? We have been having discussions at the supply house about this quite a bit lately. Last I heard was the whole mess was being put on hold.

So 1/1/2006 will be NEC 2005 for other than one and two family?
One and two family in June '06 with the new NYSRBC??

Have you seen anything on a NYS website that I can reference?
I searched on Yahoo and on the NYS .gov website and couldn't find anything.

Indiana has adopted the Indiana Electrical Code on November, 21 which is based off the "2005" NEC.
I have sent Tara this info so the code adoption list on this web site could be updated, but as of yet it hasn't. Could be because of the hurricane problems?

Now if only NYS can get that whole pesky liscening issue under control. We may be into the 3rd millenium before that gets resolved.

You seem to understand this well.
I was at a NYSBOC meeting with Ron Piester, Director of Codes Division, NYS.
Hold told us this more than once.

As to when they will post it on the NYS website, is a good question. I will email them tomorrow to see if I can have something posted.


For the last 3 years, NYS has been referencing the '99 NEC, prior to that, legally it was the '93 version, but most were doing whatever, including Westchester County was even referencing the 2002 for 1 year before they found out about the change.

Proper information is very important, and I do not like to post anything, unless I am at least .99 percent positive :D

Why are New Yorkers always in a bad mood?
Because the light at the end of the tunnell is New Jersey. :p
We got out of NJ. But, the grass is always greener....

You can purchase a copy of the modified NYC Electrical Code from an outfit in California (approximately $125). I have seen it, and it is confusing to read. You are better off downloading (FREE) the amendments (you will find them on the link I provided) and either keep them with the book, or cut them and paste them into a book (I did that). I also marked the margin with a purple highlighter where every ammendment is located in the book. I have been told that each cycle, there will be less amendments - there are approximately 300 now.

BTW: I like some of the amendments, and some I do not like ;)

Thank you Gentlemen:

Who makes the electrical inspections in NYC? NYBFU? City people?

Any politics, or are they able to enforce the rules without any problems?

I noticed that only a few are shown as providers, what is the process for becoming a provider?

The BEC is responsible for the electrical inspectors. I believe that for a city of 9,000,000 people there are 38 inspectors :eek: .
There basically are no open wall inspections, and the final inspection has occurred after the tenant has actually closed doors. My brother had his office built, and the inspector showed up for the final almost 3 years after he moved in, Looked at the panel and left.

The BEC is in the middle of making changes to this whole process, I give them a lot of credit for trying as this is going to be very difficult for many, many reasons.

Yes, having traveled throughout NYS I was very surprised to learn about the lack of licensing and overall lack of code compliance. NY is huge and spasely populated state, and also has the "rust belt" problem. It would be extremely hard to implement a licensing system in my opinion.

Does this mean when the Residential code is out it will reference the 05 code. The word from the inspectors it will reference the 02 code.
