NFPA 110 Annex A provides guidelines for Level 1 / Level 2 emergency power systems. Does anyone know where to find a not-necessarily-comprehensive listing of these on the web without purchasing the NFPA document?

The document is not expensive. You will not find a legitimate copy on the web, and I would be concerned the material is not correct.

You are an engineer, you or your firm should purchase this and other pertinent documents as you need them, this is part of doing business.

It would be like a contractor asking another contractor, "can I borrow your drill today".

Yes I have. But most of the standards other than the NEC are not adopted as law, they are only used as reference.

I wonder if the reason you stated is why they do this, or if they think it is good marketing for future sales. I know that I would, and do have a lot of the standards either in print or as a download on my computer.
 
I did order it this morning, but was hoping to get a head start on specifying the genset before the book arrived.

The java applet doesn't work for me at NFPA.org - I think because of our office's temporary internet setup while they house us engineers in a remote building. Some firewall thing. It used to work. :(

Specifically I was interested to know if a generator backing up elevators and lighting for a 6-story residential unit qualifies as Level 1 or Level 2. I assume Level 1 since safe egress obviously correlates to saving human lives...but I couldn't find anything by googling.

If anyone knows the anwwer, I'd love to know it now rather than in three days. Don't have much to do and would like to narrow my research to either Level 1 or Level 2 gensets instead of trying to sort out both at the same time.

My apologies for having been so cryptic in my original question - I'm still getting used to this forum and tend to hold my cards close, at least until I have a good feel for how a place operates.
 
Chapter 4 of the NFPA 110 identifies Level 1 and Level 2 systems. Level 1 are defined as "systems that are installed when failure of the equipment to perform could result in loss of human life or serious injuries." Level 2 are defined as "systems that are installed when failure of the EPSS to perform is less critical to human life and safety and where the authority having jurisdiction shall permit a higher degree of flexibility than provided by a Level 1 system. "

In general, emergency power supply systems are identified by class, type and level.
 
The elevators wouldn't normally be used for emergency egress, and a back up generator isn't normally required for elevators.

And if this is a hospital or similar, "defend in place" is often the strategy in response to a fire or similar event.

I doubt your generator needs to meet either level as far as the elevator is concerned.

As far as the lighting goes, I'm not sure, but I think level 1 is usually for life support or surgery. I don't think general egress lighting requires level 1.

At this point in time the decision in the Veeck case is only binding in the 5th Circuit. That would be the states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. It can be cited in cases in other states, but it is only required to be followed within the 5th Circuit.
