Could anyone tell me if the NFPA 72 code is on the internet. What I'm looking for is the part which is specific to the installation/location of residential smoke detectors.

Thanks for any leads.

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

Do you have a specific question? If your public library has the NFPA 72 on hand, you will find what you're looking for in chapter 11 I think.

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

I once had to find an NFPA standard that my company's subscription did not include. I found it be visiting the city?s Fire Marshall, who let me read their copy.

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

Contact the local apprenticeship program in your area. They carry a good library of references and have instructors that will be willing to assist you in finding needed information.

Our program in this area has instructors that are contractors, building officials, and fire marshalls. One of us is going to have a copy to provide you. :)

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

While Im on the subject, I am suprised by how few persons take advantage of our apprenticieship program. Im am not talking about enrolled students, but participating contractors, electricians, or even the public in general.

Our main focus is for the development of the electrical industry in whole and not just the first 4-years of an electricians career. I personally would assist any person needing assistance with exam prep, job issues, or even to provide specialized training on a subject.

Just because a lot of you guys out there are well past the apprenticeship level, it doesn't mean there is nothing the apprenticeship program can provide for you. Get it shot sometime. Its a good networking oportunity, and you may find yourself wanting to instruct or asssist with the program. Thanks.

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

Bryan, well said. I have even had visitors in my class while teaching apprentices. They were paying guests who got the benefit of the area we were covering at the time. It has been a while since I have taught in that setting but I would think most apprenticeship programs would welcome guests. :D

Re: NFPA 72 online ???

This is an interesting question on "where can I get this on the internet?". We are now spoiled by the internet and used to being able to find virtually anything on line. But the requirements for residential smoke detectors are mostly in the instructions that come with the detectors, they will suffice for most applications. Your AHJ will have the complete instructions
